Green aurora arcing over a wide northern waterfall, the water smoothed by a long exposure with spruce forest on the far bank

Stop, Take a Breath, Steal a Moment and Take it With You

Aurora over frozen lakes, grizzlies in the Kluane backcountry, and waterfalls in the coastal rain — from Yellowknife to Vancouver Island, and all over western Canada.

Hello — I'm Matt.

I shot for my high school yearbook, and the teacher there told me I had an eye and should keep going. I didn't — not for years.

Moving north is what changed it. I got to Yellowknife and found myself standing under the aurora on clear nights holding a phone that couldn't come close to recording it. Phones still struggle with it now. I wanted my family and friends down south to see what I was seeing, so I bought my first DSLR and started learning the craft in the cold.

That's still the reason. Most of what's here is an attempt to hand somebody else a moment I got to stand in.
